The Cutting Board: Family-Sized Housing, Can Multiplexes Be The Answer?

Uytae Lee of About Here and Cara Stern of Missing Middle are partnering on a video asking what Canada's next family home is, investigating multiplexes as one of those options. How well are they doing as an answer to family-sized housing? It is a simple question with about a dozen answers, and it is not finished: the direction it takes is still open.

Join Cara and Uytae on the porch to get a sense behind the scenes of how a script comes together, and to give some input on this story. This is the sit-down hour in the middle of a day otherwise spent walking, riding and filming.

Why are we doing this?

Like any housing story, this one has more moving parts than it first appears: land economics, lending programs, plain old zoning bylaws, all of them shaping what a multiplex actually looks like on the ground. A video essay usually arrives with those arguments settled and the detours already cut. This one has not got there yet, which is what makes the hour worth sitting in on.

Pourquoi on fait ça?

Comme toute histoire de logement, celle-là a plus de morceaux qu'il n'y paraît : l'économie du terrain, les programmes de prêt, les bons vieux règlements de zonage, tout ça décide de quoi un multiplex a l'air pour vrai. Un essai vidéo arrive d'habitude avec ces arguments-là réglés pis les détours déjà coupés. Celle-là n'est pas rendue là, pis c'est ça qui rend l'heure intéressante.
