How Hard Is It To Buy A Snack Near A Brand New REM Station?

The REM is the shiny new toy of Montreal's transit system. But Arden English of The Greater Discussions comes from Vancouver, where driverless trains are nothing special, and he has a bone to pick with the land use around the REM's brand new stations.

So he is setting out to find how hard it can be to get a simple snack from the nearest stores of as many REM stations as six hours can buy, traversing whatever seas of parking, highways and poor pedestrian infrastructure try to get in his way.

A station is only as useful as what you can reach on foot when you step off the train. That is the thing being measured here, one convenience store at a time.

Why are we doing this?

Building the train is the expensive part and the part that gets announced. What surrounds the station is the part that decides whether anybody can use it for anything, and it is usually nobody's headline. Walking it is the fastest way to show the gap.

Le REM, c'est le nouveau jouet du transport collectif montréalais. Mais Arden English, de The Greater Discussions, vient de Vancouver, où les trains sans conducteur n'ont rien d'exceptionnel, pis il a un compte à régler avec l'aménagement du territoire autour des stations flambant neuves du REM.

Alors il part voir à quel point ça peut être compliqué d'aller chercher une simple collation au commerce le plus proche, dans le plus de stations du REM que six heures peuvent lui permettre, en traversant les mers de stationnement, les autoroutes et les aménagements piétonniers douteux qui vont se mettre en travers de son chemin.

Une station vaut seulement ce que tu peux atteindre à pied en descendant du train. C'est ça qu'on mesure ici, un dépanneur à la fois.

Pourquoi on fait ça?

Construire le train, c'est la partie chère pis celle qui fait l'objet d'une annonce. Ce qu'il y a autour de la station, c'est la partie qui décide si quelqu'un peut s'en servir pour quoi que ce soit, pis ça fait rarement les manchettes. Le marcher, c'est la façon la plus rapide de montrer l'écart.
